Now, I'm emphatically NOT saying it's badwrongfun to play and enjoy this game! I And by all accounts (in the reviews I've read of the RPG) the mechanics absolutely support a very high fantasy big damn heroes gameplay.įor me, however, enjoying the playing of a big damn hero wouldn't involve framing like I've outlined above.Īs I'm weighing whether or not to save up the money to invest in this game, will folks who own the game, and have played it (the RPG version, not the miniatures version, because I realize those could be different lore-wise), correct my understanding? Add nuance to it? Point out how/where I'm misunderstanding the lore/setting?Ĭlick to expand. As noted, this is explicit - because when the "barbarians" are not Servants of Darkness, they are generally the slaves of those who are or fighting a losing war against those who are, and to them, Order actually is a force of liberation. (I've also seen such lore, or oblique references to it, from RPG reviews of the Soulbound RPG in a couple of other places too.) And all of this is coded as ok, because the "barbarians" currently occupying the land are "servants of chaos".er "exploration" by "civilized" cultures (e.g. The goal is to "liberate" these "barbaric" lands for safe exploitat. They are opposed by implied barbaric "chaos baddies" at every turn, and the only way the stalwart pioneers can overcome the (already living there) forces of barbarism is through ultra "heroic" violence.
They are fronting for an imperialist sounding group that provides "instant" cities and "instant" ways to remake the land they are entering into.A technologically superior group of combative pioneers is going forth into "untamed" or "chaotic" lands. It sets off my internal "YIKES" alarm.įrom that linked article above, here's my key takeaways: While I'm not personally a fan of any miniatures game (not my thing, not a critique of the activity), I looked to the lore of the miniatures game upon which the RPG is based for info on the setting.Īnd, from this miniatures focused post "Fancy a New Life Bringing Order to the Mortal Realms? Join a Dawnbringer Crusade Today", the lore sounds, um, not appealing to me. Still, from reviews I've read, it doesn't seem like that's the lore of the game. I heard about Age of Sigmar Soulbound RPG, and thought "cool, roleplaying big damn heroes in a version of the Old World could be cool". And I played the heck of out that game (as an alternate to D&D, Campions, and a couple of others we were playing in those days). The.punk (for want of a better word in my vocabulary) aesthetic of the whole book was compelling. The over the top critique of (in particular UK political leadership driven) society that permeated the game's zeitgeist wasn't lost on me even at a young age. I absolutely adored Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 1st edition when it came out.
